* * *

As they drove down into Historic Kailua Village, Blossom thought about their conversation. She had told him about her awful prom dress. And instead of thinking less of her, he had thought less of them.

It was so endearing!

“It seems everybody has their poor-me story,” she had said.

“I don’t,” Joe had said.

And that was so true, and also endearing. That was part of what she loved so much about him. Joe seemed so normal. It felt as if he could lead her there, to that place she had always longed for.

Even now, sitting beside her in the vehicle, those crazy shorts couldn’t even touch how normal he was.

Calm and in control.

“The traffic is insane,” she said.

“Nothing driving in Vancouver hasn’t prepared me for. You have to remember this was once just a quaint and sleepy fishing village, and a summer retreat for Hawaiian royalty. This main road, Ali’i Drive, despite lots of upgrades, just wasn’t originally designed to handle the huge amount of traffic it now gets.”

A tiny car shot out of a parking spot and would have hit them if Joe was not so alert. He calmly put his arm out the window, folded three fingers down, and with his thumb and pinky up, wagged his wrist at the other driver.

“What’s that mean?” Blossom asked.

“It’s the shaka sign. Sometimes called hang loose. You’ll see it’s a pretty common gesture on the islands. It kind of means, we’re all friends, take it easy, all’s good.”

“Very different than the one-fingered salutes you get while driving in Vancouver, and that you’d especially get after nearly smashing into someone!”

“The shaka is just part of that aloha attitude. Look how congested it is, and yet the only agitation you see is from the tourists. And they generally calm down, become more live-and-let-live, after the islands have worked their magic on them for a few days. Besides, we got left a parking spot!”

Blossom would have passed on the slot they’d been left as too challenging to get the larger vehicle into. But Joe maneuvered into the tiny parking stall with that easy confidence he did everything with.

Again, it reminded her it wasn’t necessarily the big things—fancy dinners and extraordinary travels and lifestyles of the rich and famous—that she missed about having Joe in her life. It was the little things. A man fresh out of the shower in the morning. His attitude in traffic.

His innate confidence that things, large and small, would just go his way.

She hardly knew where to look first, as they got out of the vehicle on Ali’i Drive. A steady stream of both locals and tourists moved down the sidewalks. She and Joe, in outfits that had seemed wild just a few minutes ago, were now only part of a moving river of color and energy.

“This is Moku’aikaua Church,” Joe told her of the enormous structure beside them, the stones black with age. There was something about Joe’s easy pronunciation of the difficult and exotic Hawaiian names that was alarmingly sensual.
